The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yōko Ogawa, Stephen Snyder (Translator)

the housekeeper and the professor

This was an impulse buy from and I am so glad that I bought it.  This was a story that was beautiful in its simplicity.  There was nothing spectacular or remarkable in this book but it was heartwarming and touching.

It is the story of a former mathematics Professor who was in an accident and now can only remember 80 minutes at a time.  He needs to be reintroduced to people that are present in his life.  He has used a maid service but has had many different maids because no one has the patience to deal with him and his mathematical conversations.  One housekeeper has lasted longer then the rest and this is their story.

It is not a love story in the traditional sense.  The love that is written about in this story is the love of a chosen family.  It is speaks of heartache and hope, love and frustration.
