My Wife is Missing by D.J. Palmer

Publication Date: May 10, 2022

Description from the Publishers through Netgalley

When a woman disappears with her two children, one husband will do anything to find them–even confront the secrets of his own past–in D. J. Palmer’s My Wife Is Missing, a twisty thriller from the author of The New Husband.

A family vacation turns into a nightmare for Michael Hart when he discovers his wife and two children have disappeared from their New York City hotel room. Horrified, he fears they’ve been kidnapped. Michael’s frantic search to find them takes a shocking turn when he discovers that his wife, Natalie, appears to have left quite willingly, taking their children with her. The police want to know why, and so does Michael. But there may be a reason why Natalie ran, something Michael can’t tell the police—the truth about his past.

While untangling his deceptions might be the key to locating Natalie, Michael knows it could also be his undoing. To find his wife, he must now turn to the one person capable of exposing all that he’s been hiding. Natalie thinks she has Michael all figured out and has hatched a plan to escape from him permanently. One detail, though, threatens to derail her efforts: sleep—or more accurately, the lack of it. Since the moment the shocking revelations about her husband came to light, Natalie’s insomnia has worsened to the point that she now suffers from delusions.

Are her fears about Michael valid—or a symptom of her condition? With her children’s lives at risk, the stakes for Natalie could not be higher. On her own, running low on energy and resources, avoiding increasingly close calls with Michael—who is on the hunt and closing in fast—Natalie needs someone to turn to for help. But who can she trust when she can’t even trust herself?

My Review

This author has consistently given me a 4-5 star read and this newest addition did not change that. When the Hart family takes a vacation to NYC, their lives change instantly, or so it seems. Told from multiple POVs and alternating timelines, you slowly get the back story of Michael and Natalie. Is Natalie’s insomnia messing with her mind completely or is Michael manipulating her?

When past events come to light, you as the reader, do not know what or who to believe. This story was well done with twist after twist.

I gave this book 4 crowns.

A gym nemesis pushes a fitness influencer to the max in Amy Lea’s steamy debut romantic comedy.

Curvy fitness influencer Crystal Chen built her career shattering gym stereotypes and mostly ignoring the trolls. After her recent breakup, she has little stamina left for men, instead finding solace in the gym – her place of power and positivity.

Enter firefighter Scott Ritchie, the smug new gym patron who routinely steals her favorite squat rack. Sparks fly as these ultra-competitive foes battle for gym domination. But after a series of escalating jabs, the last thing they expect is to run into each other at their grandparents’ engagement party.

In the lead up to their grandparents’ wedding, Crystal discovers there’s a soft heart under Scott’s muscled exterior. Bonding over family, fitness, and cheesy pick-up lines, they just might have found her swolemate. But when a photo of them goes viral, savage internet trolls put their budding relationship to the ultimate test of strength.

My Review

I do not normally gravitate toward contemporary romances but this book piqued my interest. A plus-size, mixed-race fitness influencer meets buff, gym guy that leads to an in-depth look at their own lives. The characters were likable and the social media posts that were interspersed throughout added to the story. I like the end message of switching one’s mindset from “body positivity” to self-respect. I really thought it was well done.

The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews

Publication Date: May 3, 2022

Description from the publishers through Netgalley

Summer begins with Mary Kay Andrews, in this delightful summer read about flipping houses, and finding true love.

Hattie Kavanaugh went to work restoring homes for Kavanaugh & Son Restorations at eighteen, married the boss’s son at twenty, and became a widow at twenty-five. Now, she’s passionate about her work, but that’s the only passion in her life. “Never love something that can’t love you back,” is advice her father-in-law gives her, but Hattie doesn’t follow it and falls head-over-heels for a money pit of a house. She’s determined to make it work, but disaster after disaster occurs, and Hattie’s dream might cost Kavanaugh & Son their livelihood. Hattie needs money, and fast.

When a slick Hollywood producer shows up in her hometown of Savannah, Georgia, she gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: star in a beach house renovation reality show called The Homewreckers, cast against a male lead who may be a love interest, or may be the ultimate antagonist. Soon, there’s more at stake than bad pipes and dry rot: during the demolition, evidence comes to light that points to the mysterious disappearance of a young wife and mother years before.

With a burned out detective investigating the case, an arsonist on the loose, two men playing with her emotions, and layers upon layers of vintage wallpaper causing havoc, it’s a question of who will flip, who will flop, and if Hattie will ever get her happily-ever-after.

My Review

If you are a fan of house flipper TV shows and unsolved murder investigations with a bit of romance, pick this book up. Mary Kay Andrews is the Queen of this mix of genres and this was a great read. Perfect for the spring into summer, this will transport you to Savannah and you will instantly fall in love with the atmosphere. I really enjoyed the characters in this story with all of their quirks.

My Review

This was such a fun read. It reminded me of a more detailed version of my favorite guilty pleasure, The Real Housewives of New Jersey. This is everything that I wanted it to be, full of betrayal and lies, snarky and sarcastic, with a hint of friendship thrown in.

Written in multiple POVs, I did find myself having to turn back to see whose voice I was reading from because I kept flying through the pages. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it if you like this type of drama.

I gave this book 5 crowns.
